How An Engineer’s Little Mistake Nearly Broke The Entire Internet.

Tech News Nation: The internet is a beautiful place and many of us have established an unbreakable relationship with the same. However, it looks like that even a wrong key press can prove to be fatal for the worldwide internet infrastructure. The same happened when an engineer of TeliaSonera–an internet infrastructure company–committed a little mistake.

Sweden-based internet infrastructure company TeliaSonera is one of the few companies that are responsible for maintaining the basic infrastructure of the internet. TeliaSonera’s transatlantic cable network plays a major role in connecting the US to various European countries.

A recent internet outage has affected many services like WhatsApp, Facebook, Slack, Reddit, and CloudFlare. After this massive outage was reported across many countries, TeliaSonera sent a note to other network operators and informed them about the mishap.

As the problem was affecting a very large chunk of people worldwide, it was assumed that it was due to some damage or cut in some transatlantic cable.

However, as it turned out, the problem was caused due to an engineer’s little mistake. Apparently, he misconfigured an important router and directed all Europe’s internet traffic to Hong Kong.

Now this problem has been fixed by TeliaSonera and things should become normal very soon.

As expected, as a result of this error, TeliaSonera is facing flak from multiple tech giants who are its customers.

Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, one of the biggest content delivery networks around, has called the reliability of TeliaSonera unacceptable.

Tanmay, World’s Youngest IBM Watson Programmer, Started Coding At The Age Of Five.

 tanmay bakshiTech News Nation: Today, we’ll read about a 12-year-old app developer Tanmay Bakshi, who is making headlines after his recent talk at IBM Developer Connect In Bengaluru. He has developed an IBM Watson-based algorithm named AskTanmay, which is also the world’s first Web-Based NLQA system.
Tanmay Bakshi, who lives in Canada, is the world’s youngest IBM Watson programmer. To my surprise, he started coding at a very young age of five.Tanmay has developed an algorithm called “AskTanmay”, which is designed by taking assistance from IBM Watson’s cognitive APIs. It’s the world’s first Web-Based NLQA system.

During his address at the developer conference, he showed how AskTanmay solves queries pertaining to ‘Person,’ ‘Organisation,’ ‘Location,’ or ‘Date’ type.

Tanmay has even open sourced his app to make it more accessible to his fellow developers.

Ever since publishing his first iOS app on the App Store, he has learned new technologies at an exponential rate, becoming fluent in today’s all major programming languages.

He is currently in seventh grade and a co-author of a book called Hello Swift, which teaches the basics of iOS coding to the young learners.

Tanmay also loves to share his knowledge via his YouTube channel Tanmay Teaches that hosts more than 80 solution videos.

Currently, Tanmay is working to develop a way to make Apple Watch work independently from the iPhone, an application to help devs and students find algorithms, and a couple of other iOS apps.

“I want to become a better developer, write more books, deliver more keynote addresses and share my knowledge through my YouTube channel,” he says.

China Makes World’s Fastest Supercomputer With 10 Million Cores And 93 Petaflops Speed.

China has surprised everyone by developing TaihuLight, the world’s fastest supercomputer, beating its own Tianhe-2. The new machine is made by China using its homegrown processors after the U.S. banned the export of Intel chips to the country. TaihuLight runs at a staggering 93 petaflops per second and features 10.65 million processor cores.

The top 500 ranking of the world’s most powerful supercomputers was introduced 23 years ago. For the first time in history, China has toppled the US to become the country with the most entries on the list. Now, China has 167 machines on the list, compared to the U.S.’s 165.The new Chinese supercomputer has beaten another Chinese machine that ruled this list for the past three years. Called TaihuLight, this supercomputer is about three times more powerful than the previous record-holder. Compared to the fastest U.S. supercomputer Cray XK7, that ranks 3rd, TaihuLight is five times faster.

The latest supercomputer rankings were released today at International Supercomputer Conference in Frankfurt.

Another important thing about TaihuLight is the use of homegrown Chinese chips. After the U.S. banned the export of Intel chips last year, China decided to use its superconductor technology.

The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer was developed at the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology (NRCPC). TaihuLight features the Made In China SW26010 processors that are said to be similar to the Digital Alpha chip.

TaihuLight has more than 40,000 chips with 10.65 million processor cores stacked in 40 cabinets. Compared to this, the fastest supercomputer of the U.S. has just 560,000 cores.

This beast showed a capacity of 93 petaflops per second on benchmark tests, which is about three times faster than past record-holder Tianhe-2.

If you think that the U.S. is simply sitting and watching these developments, read the next sentence. The American government has already granted a $200 million contract to Intel and NVIDIA to build a 150 petaflop machine.

This Lenovo Crazy Tablet Folds In Half And Becomes A Smartphone.

 

lenovo foldable phone Lenovo wowed the audience at the Tech World 2015 by presenting two foldable concept devices. Lenovo’s tablet Folio folds and turns into a phone. On the other hand, the smaller of the two, Cplus phone, wraps around the wrist like a watch.

At the Tech World 2016, Lenovo launched its 2016 flagship smartphone Moto Z. The same event also witnessed something other tech giants like Samsung and LG have been trying to achieve from a long time.At the event, Lenovo showed off a tablet that folds in half and becomes a smartphone. Demonstrated by YouTuber Meghan McCarthy, this flexible device has been under development for about a year.

Lenovo didn’t reveal much about this tablet as it’s just a proof-of-concept device. In the GIF below, see how neatly Meghan folded the tablet and held it near her ear like a smartphone:

That was not all Lenovo had to offer. The company also showed off a foldable smartphone. During the keynote, Meghan folded a smartphone and wrapped it around her wrist. Take a look at it below:

While the foldable Lenovo tablet concept is being called Folio, Cplus is the name given to the smartphone. These are some really cool concepts and we hope them to become fully developed and practical enough to use in real life.

It’s also rumored that Samsung could launch a foldable version of its next flagship Galaxy S7 in 2017.

‘Bluetooth 5’ Coming Next Week — 4 Times The Speed And 2 Times The Range.

Making Bluetooth communication much faster, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group is releasing Bluetooth 5 next week. This new standard will make Bluetooth four times the present range and twice as fast as the current speed.

 

Bluetooth 5, the next iteration of the wireless communications technology, is going to be announced by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) next week.

This update in Bluetooth will bring vast improvements in the technology. Bluetooth 5 will offer four times the present operating range and twice as fast as the current speed.

This means, the Low Energy Bluetooth version users will witness a speed of 1.3mbps and a range of 400m from their Bluetooth devices.

As more devices are becoming ‘smarter’, a new and improved Bluetooth standard will make communication much easier. Bluetooth 5 will also usher in the new era of location-based services, becoming useful for networked IoT devices by coming with support for long-range radio connections.

Bluetooth Special Interest Group executive director Mark Powell said that the upcoming standard will improve connectionless services like beacons to help navigate indoors.

This change is in line with last year’s announcement by SIG–whose members include Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Apple, and Lenovo–that outlined a focus on rolling out better support for IoT applications.

In his official statement, Powell said: “By adding significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions, Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world.”

SIG will officially roll out the new version on June 16th in London. Instead of trying something fancier, the group chose to go ahead with the name Bluetooth 5 because of its simplicity and ease in marketing.

However, you won’t be able to get your hands on Bluetooth 5 right away. To get the benefit of this technology, you need to buy a device with Bluetooth 5-supporting chip. Sadly, this won’t be possible until 2017-2018.
